Buying curtains, especially door window curtains, are not an easy task, and here is a list of five styles of curtains to keep in mind when making your curtain purchase.

While it may seem like new curtains should be a relatively easy thing to buy, there are a surprising number of variables to keep in mind to get the best results for you. Things like adjustability, how they gather at the top, and installation methods all play a huge part in making a final decision for this particular piece of interior decor. Buying curtains, especially for specialty areas like glass doors and windows, can be difficult. Keeping that in mind, here’s a list of five styles of curtains you can purchase online or in a brick and mortar store that will keep you and guests satisfied for years to come.

Tip: Before buying curtains online, make sure that you take care to measure your window dimensions. You may also want to consider if energy-efficient blackout curtains are right for your situation.

Door Panel Curtains

Having tall, beautiful doors fitted with elegant windows that allow for natural light to shine through your entrance – at first glance – seems like a dream come true. While yes, they are almost as amazing as they sound, finding an accessory to allow you a bit of control over lighting and privacy can be difficult. At that point, you need properly fitted door window curtains that will keep things covered from top to bottom. These curtains can be hung through hooks, rods, or rolled up. Door panel curtains are generally easy to maintain. Most can be machine washed following the care instructions on the label. Regularly vacuum or dust the curtains to prevent dust accumulation.

Ruffled Curtains

If you’re looking to integrate an elegant, classic look into your home, ruffled curtains are the way to go. The actual ruffles that make the curtain can be set in any quantity and place on the set. They come in a variety of soft, pastel colors that can bring an old-fashioned, calming feel into any home. Well-placed ruffles, particularly those concentrated at the top of the curtains, can create the illusion of higher ceilings, making a room feel more spacious. Whether you’re drawn to the grandeur of a Victorian mansion or the charm of a cozy cottage, ruffled curtains can add a touch of personality and character to your windows

Pencil Pleated

A common choice (and for good reason), these hanging bunches of fabric have a set of string on the top that makes for easy installation on almost any rod or hook. Of course, they are not limited to any room and are great for anyone who may not have a lot of experience installing these pieces of decor. Pencil pleat curtains offer a sophisticated and streamlined look. Unlike fuller pleating styles like box pleats or goblet pleats, pencil pleats create a more subtle and uniform texture. This clean aesthetic makes them a popular choice for modern, contemporary, and minimalist interiors.

Pinch Pleated

Much like pencil pleated curtains, these are classic, straight, easy to maneuver pieces of fabric that can be hung anywhere from your glass door to a window. However, these are designed to maintain an elegant and eye-catching “bunched” look at the top. Both come in a variety of colors and fabrics and are bound to fit almost any aesthetic preference. Our collection of pinch pleated draperies includes a variety of materials and styles. From light, colorful fabrics to heavy-duty winter materials and designs, The Curtain Shop offers something for everyone.

Tab Top

Tab Top curtains are, as the name implies, supported by fabric “tabs” on the top that slide easily into any rod. Your choice of accessories may be somewhat limited (for example, no hooks), but they are known to be sturdy, exceptionally easy to install, and add a unique, endearing feel to almost any room. Most tab top curtains are machine washable, making maintenance a breeze. Follow the care instructions on the label to ensure proper cleaning and avoid shrinkage or fading. When not in use, store your curtains neatly folded or hung on a rod to prevent wrinkles.

Incorporating some of your spring home decor ideas is not always easy, but if you follow a few basic intuitive rules, you cannot go wrong.

As of this writing, it’s official. The clock has just jumped forward, and it’s time to give your home a nice deep cleaning after a long winter of cozy hot drinks and sedentary afternoons indoors. Unfortunately, incorporating your spring decorating ideas can be easier said than done. It’s ok; nobody’s an expert. That’s why it’s important to follow a few basic intuitive rules, such as:

Let Light In

With the variety of materials available for fabric window displays across all varieties, there’s no reason that you shouldn’t be able to experiment and play around with various fabrics to see what you like for what season. From thick, warm suede to silks, different materials tend to impact:

1) The Weight of the Item

2) The Opaqueness and Transparency

Personally, I recommend that you celebrate the coming warmer weather and longer days by allowing as much light as possible with spring decorating ideas that incorporate light, easy to clean, sheer drapery.

Don’t Be Afraid of Soft Pastels

Spring is the time of redecoration and a return to a bright aesthetic that signifies the coming summer. In other words, there’s no better time to take a few risks with your spring home decor. Oftentimes, having interior items in the understated yet eye-catching colors of your lavenders and mints are a great way to bring in the season, and could last you until the return of cooler seasons.

Tip: Polka dots tend to look great in pastels, and is another way to signify the exuberance for life that the season has come to represent.

Floral Prints

As birds and insects become increasingly vocal after a long, dormant winter and rain returns in droves, it’s not surprising that spring has long been associated with rebirth, new beginnings, and a return of nature around our homes. Because of this, people often incorporate flowers and floral shapes when thinking about spring house decor ideas. They also happen to lend themselves to colors you would usually associate with spring, such as greens and citruses. Realistic or abstract, you have a variety of designs to choose from, all able to be easily implemented.

Our Alba printed sheer floral printed grommet curtain panel will allow a generous amount of natural light to brighten your living space while providing daytime privacy.  The lovely neutral pastel tones provide the perfect back drop to welcome the Spring for any room in your home.  It’s the best way to add style to your windows.

Floral patterns are a classic spring choice, but you could also consider stripes, geometric patterns, or even butterfly or bird motifs if you are looking for something new to liven up your home for those breezy, warmer Spring days.

Tip: Daffodils tend to be the go-to plant to represent spring.

Tassels!

Tassels tend to provide an eye-catching flair to any piece of decoration they adorn. From pillows to valances, they accompany many decorative items. Depending on how you use them, they can implement a variety of moods to a room, oftentimes providing a sense of whimsical freedom or elegant opulence. More importantly, they happen to be super in this season. Our recommendation for implementing these particular pieces is to keep it noticeable, but somewhat understated. For your window dressing, try relegating them more or less to your tiebacks or valances.

We offer a variety of tassel tiebacks to complement just about any curtain color and style.

Although it sounds like a relatively simple task, there are many things you must consider when selecting suitable curtain rods. These rods aren’t always interchangeable, and every style won’t match your interior decor, so you’ll have some decisions to make as you look through the available options.

Of course, your personal preferences matter. However, the size of your window, other household interior design elements, and the style of curtains you want to hang will also contribute to the curtain rods you ultimately buy.

Purchasing curtain rods isn’t something you’ll want to do on a whim. Here are some aspects you’ll want to consider before choosing new curtain rods for your home or business.

Select a Rod Type

Numerous rod types are available, so you’ll want to learn a bit about them before making your final decision.

Standard rods are the most common and are probably what you currently have in your home. These rods are typically made from metal or plastic and are versatile enough to accommodate various curtain styles. They often have decorative finials at each end and feature mounting brackets to attach them to the wall or ceiling.

Tension curtain rods are a bit different because they don’t need mounting hardware. Instead, the rod is compressed between two surfaces, like walls or window frames, and stays in place that way. You can’t use tension rods everywhere, but they’re handy because you don’t have to drill into your walls or ceiling. Magnetic curtain rods are similar, except you’ll need a metal mount to complete the installation.

Traverse curtain rods come with a mechanism that enables you to open or close the curtains by pulling on a cord. The curtains are usually connected to sliders instead of directly to the rod. Many people love traverse curtain rods because they ensure you can open and close your curtains without having to pull on the fabric.

Looking at these various rod types is a solid start as you select the right product to meet your needs.

Get the Right Size

Next, you’ll want to ensure you purchase the right size of curtain rod. Taking some measurements will be necessary so you don’t end up with a product that’s too large or too small for your window. To determine the correct sizing for your curtain, consult with our curtain sizing information page.

You can start by measuring the width and height of the window. You’ll want to include your trim and molding in this measurement and add some extra width for the overhang. This overhang should add between four and eight inches to your measurements on each side.

You’ll also need to account for your finials. Finials are the decorative pieces at the ends of your rod, and you’ll need enough space to fit them on the far side of your mounting bracket. You might need a couple of extra inches in length to accommodate these decorations.

Finally, you can look at the rod’s weight capacity and compare it against the rod. Thick curtains weigh more and will require a heavy-duty rod to hold them. The rod you select will have a weight capacity limit, so ensure your curtains fall within these parameters before you buy.

Research Materials

Curtain rods come in various materials, so you’ll have some decisions to make as you look through them.

Many modern curtain rods come in metal materials like steel, aluminum, or wrought iron. These rods are durable and strong, as they’ll usually support heavier curtains. They also feature various finishes like, matte or polished, which you can select depending on the rest of your interior design.

Plastic curtain rods are lightweight and inexpensive, making them a popular choice if you need a temporary rod while deciding on a permanent solution. Of course, plastic comes in many colors and styles, but it won’t be strong enough to support heavy curtains and could break easily if it encounters any type of abuse.

Wood curtain rods give a classic, rustic look and are becoming more popular in homes around the country. Wood is lightweight but durable, offering the best of both worlds, and you can paint it if you find it doesn’t match the rest of your aesthetic. The one drawback with wood is that it doesn’t deal well with moisture, so condensation on your windows could cause problems.

Make the Right Choice For Your Home

Other aspects you’ll want to look at when choosing curtain rods include the color, mountain options, and the curtains you’ll be hanging in your home. The entire package should come together to create the precise look you desire, and fortunately, you’ll have countless options as you search for the perfect curtain rods to meet your needs.

The Curtain Shop features a wide selection of standard and decorative rods in various materials. Whether you’re searching for something quick and easy to install or a classic wood piece to finish your room, we’ve got you covered. Look at our available curtain rods to find the right product for your home or business.

Within any art, colors play an incredibly important role in how we perceive the mood or tone of a piece of work. For instance, you wouldn’t expect the depressed serenity of a rainy urban street to contain bright purples and oranges. This principle is called a color theory. It is a central concern when designing a living space, especially for your walls and curtains, which are large spaces that take up a lot of visual real estate. This article will offer tips for matching curtain color to an area.

Get Familiar With Color Vocabulary

Before we get into the essence of how to match curtains with your wall color, here’s some basic color theory vocabulary:

Color Wheel

Analogous Colors: Colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel and appear similar (red, orange, and red-orange)
Complementary Colors: Colors that are directly opposite of each other on the color wheel (blue and yellow)
Cool Colors: Subtle, calming colors (light blue and mint)
Warm Colors: Bright, eye-catching colors (red and magenta)

Don’t Overdo It With Patterns

Patterns, such as polka dots and stripes, can be a fantastic way to accentuate certain parts of your home and express yourself creatively. Putting too many uncoordinated patterns into your design elements can be distracting and excessive. If you are looking to coordinate your curtains and walls, make sure that at least one is a solid color if the other is patterned.

Use Complementary Colors Wisely

Complementary colors are often used to create striking visuals that can highlight understated details. They can also create visual symmetry when used a certain way. Whatever you are using it for, it’s bound to catch the eye of guests when applied to your curtains and walls. Just make sure the hues you use are appropriate for the room you are decorating. One piece of advice is to use vivid, brighter colors in the living room and relaxing, lighter tones in the bedrooms. The Curtain Shop has a wide selection of rod pocket curtains in terms of both color and design that will allow you to find the perfect match for your home.

Be Careful When Combining Cool and Warm Colors

As with complementary colors, combining cool and warm tones can be an excellent way to make specific details stand out in a room. That’s why, when matching curtains to wall color, one should be warmer or cooler than the other. A light blue-gray can create pop alongside a yellow wall. This guidance is also an applicable philosophy when choosing knick-knacks or baseboard colors. Make sure the more substantial design element, such as the walls when compared to curtains, is the brighter, warmer color. Don’t forget to consider the use of valances and window toppers as a way to add color or complement the look of your drapes and curtains.

When decorating, you want to make sure that your newly customized space that’s both functional and holds up to your aesthetic preferences. This is particularly important to keep in mind when decorating something like a window, which takes up so much visual space in a room. Sometimes, however, it’s easy to get ahead of yourself and make certain missteps that give you a result that you may not like.

Making Things Too Dark or Too Bright

When it comes to sources of natural light for your room, your windows are, well, pretty much what you solely rely on. That means that you’ll want to be mindful of how things like window accessories can block the outside world. A common issue that people come across when combining curtains and blinds is getting a setup that you can’t quite control, leaving you with more or less light during certain times of the day. The thickness of your fabric curtains or the shape and direction of your blinds can play a huge part.

Tip: Vertical blinds tend to be more energy-efficient, and are more aggressive in blocking out light.

Adding Too Many Patterns

While one of the benefits of having a variety of custom curtains with blinds to match is that you have a wide selection to choose from that can fit almost any aesthetic preference, sometimes it’s essential to keep a little bit of restraint in mind when flexing your decorative muscle. For instance, adding too many or poorly integrated patterns that confuse the eye and seems incohesive. Stick to one or two patterns around the room, and you’ll be sure to add plenty of personality to a room that’s pleasing to you and guests alike.

Choose the Curtain Shop for Curtain Rods Galore

While it may not seem like it, patio curtain rods make for a great way to enhance the visual presence of your patio door. With their variety of shapes and colors, these basic metal rods can be essential to completing a look for your room.

Tip: Make sure that your curtain rod matches or compliments your drapes in some way. If your curtains are patterned,

Under-Decorating

Somewhat of a contrast to our last point, you don’t want to leave your room looking cold and visually uninteresting by picking bland colors when decorating. One of the main benefits of pairing blinds and curtains together is that you have more opportunity to choose colors, textures, patterns, and all of the other things that make a decorative item interesting. Don’t waste these features by keeping things super muted with no consideration for the rest of your room.

Matching Too Many Things

One of the great parts of buying certain accessories is being able to match it to other design elements to allow to enhance certain features, elements, and colors. However, there are times when too much of a good thing can turn a room into a homogeneous mess. That’s why (especially when deciding to get blinds with curtains), you don’t want to keep things too exact. Don’t be afraid to get a rod that contrasts with your curtains and blinds, and don’t be afraid to get patterned curtains to work with your solid blinds.

Still Wondering About Which Curtains and Blinds Should Decorate Your Home? Welcome to the Curtain Shop

With our selection of custom and cost-effective interior decor, you’ll never be of want for that missing piece that will help elevate your room. You won’t have to worry about matching the wrong blinds and curtains (or their accessories) together ever again.

Elegant, light blocking, and part of our everyday lives, curtains are an important and pervasive piece of interior decoration. What you may not know is that the history of this piece of textile unveils a fascinating look into the evolution of fabric creation and trading, showing how this simple but effective invention quickly changed lives all around the globe. It also reveals that curtains have a surprising amount of different uses that you can apply to your own life.

The Beginning

With such a simple idea (a single drape of fabric used to visually obscure an area), it may not come as a shock to learn that many believe curtains to have been invented around 3000 B.C, specifically in ancient Egypt. With the expanse of trade routes, the invention found itself decorating Greco-Roman homes.
As further trading allowed, different textiles became more common (such as silks being traded from the east), and so the varieties in colors and types of curtains became more varied than ever. Curtains were seen as more of a luxury item in many circles. That, combined with the increasing fascination of all things “oriental”, means opulent designs and dyes combined eastern imagery. With the upcoming Industrial Revolution, curtains finally became easy to mass-produce and soon became accessible to homes across the world.

Functionality Over Time

Surprisingly, curtains didn’t quite start as the window decoration that you see today. They served as more of a room divider, allowing residence of a single room or small home some privacy without having to construct a whole wall. These hanging textiles were made of thick, sturdy fabric, and most likely wouldn’t make for the easily maneuverable window decorations you see today. Eventually, they would become made of lighter hybrid materials, easier to hang up and generally maneuver, and become widely available to buy and look at through a variety of vendors. As you can imagine, this opened up curtains to be available for a variety of uses.

Some popular varieties of curtains that have been developed include:

Of course, there are accessories (such as rods and ties) that can help you further customize your new curtains, or just assist in making them as easy as possible to use.

Tip: To add an additional level of opacity and increase the privacy capability of your curtains (or to increase its overall energy efficiency), separate liners can be used.

Are you decorating your new home? Do you want to update the decor of your bedroom, living room or den? If so, it’s time to consider pairing curtains and blinds together. This can easily be done and it’s not as taboo as many people might think. If you follow these four decorating tips, you should have no trouble finding curtains with blinds to match for every room of your home.

Tip #1: Pick the Blinds First

The most important thing you can do when hanging curtains with blinds to match is to pick the blinds first. You need to pick the type of blinds you’d like to hang in your kitchen or living room first. Do you want Venetian blinds or roller blinds? Make sure you pick blinds that are solid in color and that the color compliments the rest of the decor in the room you are redesigning or decorating.

Tip #2: Hang the Window Treatments High and Wide

If you are interested in hanging both curtains and blinds, you will be at an advantage, especially if you live in a smaller home. Combining these two window treatments can help make the rooms look larger. Hang the blinds just below the ceiling, then hang the curtain rod at the same height as the blinds. This makes your room look taller than it really is.

Tip #3: Be Sure to Match Colors

When it’s time to hang curtains and blinds together, don’t forget to match the colors as much as possible. Match the color of the rod and any other hardware you use to the colors of the blinds and curtains. Try to purchase hardware that has a matte finish so that the overall look of all the window treatments match as closely as possible. Avoid a curtain rod that is finished in gold or bright silver. These rods can take too much attention away from the curtains and blinds.

Tip #4: Never Hang Print Over Print

If you must have a pattern on your blinds or curtains, choose which one will have the pattern and then pick a complementary color for the other window treatment. You should never have printed on both of these – it can become very overwhelming looking at them constantly.

In this day and age of mass production and efficient shipping, it may not come as a surprise that the variety of choices that every consumer has at their fingertips may feel overwhelming. Especially when choosing between two seemingly different products, such as curtains and drapes online. However, look a bit closer, and you’ll see apparently small but incredibly important differences that can totally change how you use and enjoy these items.

To do that, we’re getting down to basics, and listing out pros and cons for both curtains and drapes that may sway you to one side or another, depending on what you’re looking for out of the product.

Curtains Pros:

  • Easily cleaned in the washing machine
  • Does not reach the floor, unlike drapes
  • Lighter than drapes
  • Does not have an obtrusive drawstring
  • Suitable for almost any decor/mood

Curtains Cons:

  • Might let too much light in
  • May seem too informal

Drapes Pros:

  • Create an impressive, formal presence in any room
  • Blocks out more light due to increased coverage/usually thicker material
  • More energy efficient

Drapes Cons:

  • Requires specialty cleaning agents that only dry cleaners can provide
  • Gets soiled fairly easily
  • Might make more noise than curtains
  • Heavy and may be difficult to install/operate

All in All

Regardless of which option you choose, either option you go with is bound to provide for your decorative needs. Where you may really want to dissect the differences are on functionality, such as how easy they are to clean, usability, and how they set a mood in a room. With the proper maintenance, either option will provide you with years of reliable use.
Tip: To add a bit of flair to your curtains or drapes, try accessorizing with things like tiebacks and rods.

Quick History of Drapery

Now that you’ve established what you’re looking for in window dressing, let’s examine where these pieces of decor began, and how looking into their past can reveal a surprising and untapped world of uses in this deceptively simple item. Drapery, as we know it, has had a long history where various styles have changed in functionality and style like the concept of textiles that adorn window spaces spread across the globe.

Eventually, as glass windows became popularized, curtains and drapes turned into a tool of privacy, used to section off parts of rooms when homes often had no individual spaces. As with any textile, mass production has allowed a variety of drapery to be adorned in homes all across the world. These days, you can buy virtually any kind of drape or curtain online, allowing anyone to have a variety of window dressing at their beck and call for any occasion.

Different windows have different requirements. When it comes to interior decorating, you have to get familiar with some design ideas that could potentially add stylish aspects to your home. Many are familiar with what the touch of curtains could do for your home, but unfamiliar with how a valance adds design flair. Here’s how chic window valance ideas can spice up your home.

What’s A Window Valance?

If you’ve ever noticed material that covers the uppermost part of the window and usually paired with blinds or curtains, then chances are you’re familiar with a valance, also referred to as window top treatments. Most valances are made of either a soft fabric that is draped, gathered or folded, covering the uppermost part of the window, swooping across the top. The touch of a valance is usually strictly for decorative purposes (not offering any privacy features) but can hide any unattractive curtain rods or any window trim you’re wishing to cover. What’s best about this design aspect is the color or pattern, creating balance and touch to your open windows. They can be paired with curtains or blinds or by itself. It’s all up to what you prefer.

Different Styles

Valances come in an infinite number of styles and go by different names, but there are four basic designs from which all other models extract inspiration from. The four basic styles include:

Pleated – The pleated valances consist of a design similar to a pleated skirt with tailored, crisp edges.

Tabbed – This requires a drapery pole, as the tabs march along with the rod intervals, creating an added design with unusual rods and finials.

Balloon – The balloon style valance sounds a lot like its name, being that it’s like a big poofy skirt that billows out at the top of the windows.

Gathered – The gathered style is styled with longer pieces of material that are pushed together along a rod to create folds that appear like a gathered skirt.

You’ll face countless decisions as you design and decorate your home’s interior. While curtains might not seem like the most pressing item on your list, you might end up spending significant time choosing these window coverings because each room could have different needs.

One option you’ll undoubtedly come across when looking for bedroom drapes is blackout curtains. These window coverings ensure the room is completely dark, even during the day, helping you sleep. Blackout curtains could be an excellent choice for shift workers or those who don’t like waking up at the crack of dawn because of the extra hours of darkness they provide.

Here’s a look at how blackout curtains work and situations you might find them beneficial, helping you make the right decision for your home.

What Exactly Are Blackout Curtains?

Before all else, you’ll need to figure out what blackout curtains are as you decide whether they’re right for you. In short, these drapes are a double-lined material with tightly woven fabric that blocks up to 99.9% of all light from outside the room.

The result is a room that stays almost entirely dark at every hour, so you don’t have to worry about the summer sun waking you up too early.

Don’t confuse blackout curtains with room-darkening curtains because they’re on an entirely different level. Room-darkening drapes let small amounts of light through, which can be good or bad depending on your needs.

Blackout curtains also block UV rays, saving your furniture from wear over the years and keeping the space cooler if your bedroom gets a significant amount of sun throughout the day.

How the Technology Works

The key to blackout curtains is their construction. These drapes are made from a thick material and sometimes woven with dark fibers to completely block out incoming light.

Some of these curtains also include a second layer of fabric or even a layer of foam between the layers to ensure no light gets through the material and into your room.

These curtains are typically made from a thick layer of nylon or polyester, although some have a wool or cotton construction. The fabrics are tightly woven, leaving no space for light to penetrate.

The Benefits of These Curtains

The main advantage of investing in blackout curtains is obvious: they’ll keep your room dark. For that reason, you’ll usually find these drapes in bedrooms because they allow homeowners to get more sleep by preventing light interference.

However, another benefit you might not know about is the energy savings they create. These drapes help regulate the internal temperature of your home, keeping it cooler in the summer. As a result, you won’t have to run your air conditioner as much, leaving you with significant cost savings if you live in a warm climate.

In addition, these curtains block sound. Those living in a downtown area with plenty of noise pollution know how challenging it can be to relax when dealing with constant traffic noise or sounds from the city. Blackout drapes block at least some of the sound that enters through your windows, making a noticeable difference.

Investing in some of these curtains can be excellent for your mental health because your environment won’t disrupt you as much. You can also experience greater energy levels, less anxiety, and better health as you get more rest in your dark bedroom.

Why Blackout Curtains Might Not Work For You

Although blackout curtains are a great option for many people, they aren’t for everyone. For instance, if your home has minimal natural light to begin with, you might not want to sacrifice the remaining amount of daylight to these curtains. This drawback is especially true in your living areas, where you’ll want at least some natural light coming in during the day.

Another potential issue is that these curtains make it so dark that you might struggle to find your way around your room at night. This problem could be a hindrance if you don’t have a light switch near your bed and need to get up for any reason.

While these cons might not apply to you, they’re worth learning about before you invest in these drapes for your home.

Find the Ideal Curtains to Meet Your Needs

Look at the curtain options available and choose the products that best suit your needs. Installing bedroom blackout curtains could be the choice if you’re worried about the sun or nearby streetlights keeping you awake and disrupting your sleep.
